Nationals in Health and Social Care
If you are interested in starting a career in health and social care or just want to find out if this is the right career choice, then these qualifications are for you. You will get an interesting introduction to health and social care. The qualifications are also very flexible, allowing you to study individual units alongside other qualifications if you want to.

  • Provide you with knowledge and understanding of what health and social care is about
  • Develop your personal skills in areas such as team working, career planning, communication and problem solving
  • Help you to build up the skills you need to either continue studying or to start work.

Progression

  • Start work at trainee level in some health and social care roles - for example, as a care assistant

There are no exams. Your tutor will assess your work for all units and this will be checked by OCR. The OCR Level 1 Nationals in Health and Social Care contain three types of qualifications, each one building on the previous.

  • To achieve the First Award in Health and Social Care, you have to achieve four mandatory units (units 1, 2, 3 and 4)
  • To achieve the National Award in Health and Social Care, you have to achieve five mandatory units (units 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5) and complete three optional units
  • To achieve the National Certificate in Health and Social Care, you have to complete 12 units consisting of the six mandatory units and six optional units.

It is also possible to work your way through the suite. You can start with the four-unit First Award and, by adding an extra mandatory unit and three optional units, you can achieve the National Award. You can then progress by taking another mandatory unit and three more optional units to gain the full National Certificate.

Level 2 National Certificate in Health and Social Care
If you fancy a career in health and social care or just want to find out if it is for you, then this is ideal. It is also possible to study individual units alongside other qualifications if you want to.

  • Learn about health and social care
  • Develop skills, knowledge and understanding that will enable you to progress
  • Keep your options open - you can carry on in health and social care or do other things.

  • Enter employment and undertake a related NVQ, for example, NVQ Care or NVQ Early Years Care and Education
