The Institute for the Management of Information Systems

The IMIS qualification framework offers 3 professional levels.

Entry Requirements

Foundation Diploma
There are no prerequisites to this course. Each module is designed to introduce the student to the basic elements of information systems practices

Diploma Course

  • Completion of the Foundation Diploma
  • Four GCSE/GCE/SEC 'O' levels, one of which should be in English and one in a numerate subject at grades A,B, or C (for overseas students grades 1 to 6 Credits/Distinctions are considered equivalent)

In exceptional circumstances candidates may be admitted under the following conditions:

  • Being 21 years of age and able to demonstrate over two years' work experience relevant to computing or a related field;
  • Candidates 19 years of age or more at the time of sitting for the institute examinations may be admitted at the discretion of the college; provided that they can satisfy the staff at the college that they are sufficiently well motivated as to enable them to cope with the demands imposed by the course of study and that they possess appropriate ability even if not measured by the acquisition of 'O' levels or equivalent

Higher Diploma Course
One of the following is required:

  • Successful completion of Diploma level examinations
  • BTEC National Certificate/Diploma in Computing
  • BTEC National Certificate/Diploma in a computing related subject with a significant computing element
  • General Certificate of Education (or equivalent) with passes in 5 subjects normally including Mathematics and English at GCSE level (grade C or above), 'A' level in a computing subject and one other 'A' level. Two passes at 'AS' level may be considered in place of one 'A' level pass
  • Scottish Certificate of Education with passes (grade 1,2 or 3) in 3 subjects at Ordinary or Standard Grade and passes (Grades A,b or C) in 4 subjects at Higher Grade one of which must be a computing related
  • Other appropriate educational qualifications deemed equivalent to the IMIS Diploma level examinations.
  • Candidates 21 years of age or over with four years appropriate work experience related to computing or a related field may also be considered for this course.

(for Certificate & Diploma)

February, June, October
(for Advanced Diploma)

Fee Structure:
Certificate / Diploma: £2,500 per annum
Advance Diploma: £2,700 per annum

Duration:
Certificate / Diploma: 1 year
Advance Diploma: 1 year

Progression to degree programmes after doing IMIS study
The following UK universities will consider IMIS Higher Diploma graduates for entry to a final year degree qualification.

Course Structure

Foundation Diploma
This is a route for candidates to gain entry to Diploma Level. This course is also suitable for young people who want to work with computers and need some entry level education. All modules defined within the course structure may be taken individually or collectively to form Foundation Diploma.

The programme will involve six main areas of study

  • Communication Skills
  • Arithmetic
  • Computing Awareness
  • Use of Packages
  • Book Keeping
  • Office Practice

Diploma Course
Continues on from the Foundation Diploma level although access at this level is also available to candidates who comply with the entrance requirements. Completion of these examinations award a Diploma Certificate and the general standard equates to the National (ONC) Certificate.

The programme will involve six main areas of study

  • Communications and Business Technology
  • Business Fundamentals
  • Business Information Systems
  • Programming and Web Applications
  • Information Systems Building
  • Information Systems Practice

Higher Diploma Course
Extends and compliments the Diploma Course to give students a comprehensive knowledge if the entire field of operations, programming, system analysis and design, and computer management. A Higher Diploma award equates to the Higher National Certificate/Diploma (HNC/HND).

The programme will involve six main areas of study

  • IS Strategy
  • Contemporary IS Development
  • Database Development
  • Project Management
